One of the famous cities to visit in India is its capital city Delhi. It is one of the oldest cities and is estimated to be 5,000 years old. Getting to Delhi is easy as you can easily find a flight to the city. Indira Gandhi International Airport is the main airport for domestic and international flights.

 

Delhi is located in North India and has the river Yamuna flowing through the eastern side of the city. On the west bank is the crowded Old Delhi and to the South West is New Delhi. It has some of the famous hotels. The Aravali range in the south is also a prominent feature of the city.  The population in Delhi consists mainly of people from north India.

 

Delhi has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and cold winters. During the winter there is heavy fog in the city. The best time for a vacation in Delhi is from the months of October to November and February to March when the weather is pleasant.

 

Delhi has memorials dedicated to the leaders of India. ‘Raj Ghat’ meaning ‘Royal Platform’ is a memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, ‘Shantivan’ meaning ‘Garden of peace’ is Jawaharlal Nehru’s samadhi and more.

 

Delhi has famous shopping bazaars like Connaught Place, Central market, Sarojini Nagar and more. You can get some good ethnic Indian clothes and export garments here. It also has popular spots for street food like Chandni Chowk and Kamala Nagar. You should definitely visit these places.

 

Delhi has famous places like the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Jama Masjid, India Gate, National Museums, Jantar Mantar and more. You can travel by taxis, metro or hire a car for sightseeing in Delhi.  

 

Places to visit

 

Red Fort

It is a red sandstone fort built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as his palace. It includes Diwan-i-Am, Hayat-Baksh-Bagh, Chatta Chowk, Diwan-i-Khas, Khas Mahal, Rang Mahal and others. In the evening there are sound and light shows in the fort. On Republic day the Prime Minister of India addresses the nation from the Red Fort.

 

Qutub Minar

The structure dates from the Slave dynasty and is a UNESCO world heritage site. This 72.5 m tall structure was constructed by Qutb-ud-din Aybak and is delicately carved. It is visible from the air while flying into the international airport. The site has been well preserved. 

 

Jama Masjid

It is the largest mosque in India, located in old Delhi and a must place to visit.

 

India Gate

This monument was built as a memorial to the Indian soldiers who died in World War II.

 

National Museum

It has some great collections of true masterpieces. It has collections of the Indus Valley culture, Buddhist Heritage, Gandhara era standing Buddha and more. It shows the arts and handicrafts from the different regions of India. It is an interesting place for those interested in Indian history and culture. 

 

Jantar Mantar

It is an astronomical observatory made by Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur during the 18th century. It has scientific instruments for measuring the movements of the celestial bodies.
